Pune: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today announced the launch of Maharashtra State Manufacturing Mission, with a commitment to spearhead the advanced manufacturing sector in India.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, at an event in Pune, released the publication “India’s Roadmap to Global Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing”, jointly prepared by NITI Aayog, and declared the establishment of a “Global Frontier Technology Institute” in the state.
While the central government has already initiated the national manufacturing drive, the state government indicated that the new Maharashtra State Manufacturing Mission will act as a complement, providing a dedicated framework for Maharashtra’s industrial and technological transformation.

Maharashtra State Manufacturing Mission to Play Critical Role
The Maharashtra State Manufacturing Mission will play a critical role in the government’s “Developed Maharashtra 2047” vision by promoting frontier technologies including artificial intelligence, quantum computing and semiconductors.
The roadmap sets out a compelling case for India to elevate manufacturing’s contribution to GDP through technology-driven industrialisation, leveraging strategic enablers such as advanced materials, robotics and digital twins.
At the event, NITI Aayog CEO B V R Subrahmanyam highlighted that no country can achieve sustained development without a robust manufacturing sector and stressed the importance of collaboration between industry, academia and states.
Chief Minister Fadnavis noted that Maharashtra has already emerged as the country’s data-centre capital and that Pune is a leading manufacturing and technology hub. Plans were announced to develop a quantum corridor between Pune and Mumbai, and to create an Innovation City in the region, which will house the Global Frontier Technology Institute, alongside the EduCity development comprising twelve global universities.

According to the Chief Minister, the Maharashtra State Manufacturing Mission will attract global talent and foreign investment, and the government has set up an action team under its ease-of-doing-business framework targeting one hundred reforms to boost the manufacturing ecosystem.
Industry leaders at the summit reinforced the urgency of upgrading manufacturing capability. Rucha Nanavati of the Mahindra Group emphasised the shift from policy to execution, particularly through R&D and AI-driven initiatives.
Chandrajit Banerjee of the CII stated that manufacturing productivity could rise by 20–30 % with the right investment in research and development.
Eshwaran Subramanyan of Deloitte noted that for India to transition into a developed economy, GDP growth must double and manufacturing’s share in global trade must increase fivefold.
The event also served as the formal release of the roadmap document, with officials from NITI Aayog and industry representatives in attendance. The document outlines actionable steps for the period 2026-2035, and beyond, to execute the advanced manufacturing vision.
